Barriers in Sport: Dealing with Defeat

Published April 13, 2017

This past weekend was the BE Cup playoff competition. For those who didn’t read the brilliant BE playoff reviews (Written by yours truly). If you place third or above you progress to the BE Cup finals in Sheffield. This naturally is a big competition for everyone in the Boccia world. It was a long day for me at least for a Sunday, I usually start the day at 12 but alas I was getting ready for my first match at 9am. The things I do for Boccia. I started off well (for more info read the brilliant playoff review) winning […]

Barriers in Sport: Managing Confidence

Published March 17, 2017

What is confidence? Or to feel confident? “A feeling of self-assurance arising from an appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities’. “The innate belief that you have the skill/ability to overcome situations you are likely to face” It affects everything we do in life. Our work, social life and day to day activities. I won’t cover all those topics in one blog post, to do so would be an example of over confidence! PACE Boccia will begin their National Boccia League campaign this weekend, a pan-disability competition open to all disabled athletes. The PACE B team will compete against the […]

Barriers in Sport: The First Step

Published February 7, 2017

It’s the start of 2017 and the world feels a markedly different place from this time last year. Of course, no one would have guessed that Donald Trump would be President, Power Rangers would be rebooted and Twin Peaks will finally be returning. But, that’s not the big change I’m alluding to from last year to this. As of the 9th of January 2017, I am officially in employment. I know what you’re thinking, you’ve looked at the title “Barriers in Sport” and just read the first paragraph, thinking this has nothing to do with sport and I just have […]

The Internet And Social Networks

Published November 11, 2014

Off the Internet, your social network means your group of friends and your family. So, on the Internet, social networks, or social network sites, are websites where you can keep in touch with people. Either your friends and family from off the Internet, or new people you meet on the Internet, on social network sites. I work and earn money on the Internet, so I use quite a few social network sites. My favourites, and the ones I use the most, are Facebook and Twitter. They help me keep in touch with people I don’t see in real life very […]

Boccia Nationals 2014

Published April 10, 2014

This years Boccia National Championships were PACE’s most successful yet. I came in third place in the BC1 category which is a personal best for me and because of that achievement I haven’t yet been disowned by my family, so I guess you can’t win them all!   The Nationals for me were proof that I’ve improved as a player since last year, demonstrated by my match against a new player called Zoe.   I won’t bore you with the details of the whole match because honestly I don’t remember most of it. I had a chance to score three […]

My Perfect Carer

Published December 6, 2013

A carer meets a disabled person’s care needs. A personal assistant (PA) provides the support that allows a disabled person to be independent. So, maybe, we could say that our parents are our carers, because they help us with our personal needs- washing, dressing, and things like that. While a Learning Support Assistant could, these days, be thought of as a PA, because they provide support that allows disabled children to learn and participate in a classroom, as independently as possible. Some disabled people have carers who are not family members. Sometimes PAs also help with personal care needs. So, […]

Why Is It Harder For A Disabled Person To Meet People?

Published August 7, 2013

Hi guys! This month I’m going to share my experiences of making friends with you, while trying to answer this question. As I’ve grown up, I have realised that how hard, or how easy, it has been, and will be, for me to meet new people, and make new friends, will depend on one very important thing. That is, where I look for my friends. I have realised through my own experiences of trying to make friends that of course it is harder for disabled people to meet new people. Of course, there are barriers to our social lives – […]

My Journey to the British Boccia Championships

Published June 30, 2013

Hi, my name is Alex and I’m pleased to be one of the PACE bloggers. I’m 20 years old and study Media Studies at Kingston University. I have never been massively into sport. My favourite sport is football and I support Manchester Utd. I get a lot of stick for this, due to the fact I was born, raised and still live in West London, but that’s a subject for another day. Other then football I wasn’t really interested in sport, partly because I’m in a wheelchair and partly because seeing my fellow students in secondary school sweating and running around like they were stranded in a […]

Having A Disability Isn’t Going To Stop Me Achieving My Dreams

Published May 24, 2013

I’m Sarah Ismail. I’m 27. I’ve lived in London for most of my life – I love the city and am proud to call it home. I have Cerebral Palsy, which for me just means some difficulty walking. But I have good speech and as my friends will tell you, hardly shut up! I used to be a member of PACE and have always thought they do very good work. I will always support them in any way I can, which is why I’m very pleased to be one of their bloggers. I’ve always liked reading and writing and have […]
